Expiation of Sins

February 19, 2011

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

From Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) who said that Allah’s Messenger (صلّى الله عليه وآله وسلّم) said: “No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.” [Reported by al-Bukhaaree]

‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (رضي الله عنه) reports: I visited the Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وآله وسلّم) during his illness and he was suffering from high fever. I said, “You have a high fever. Is it because you will have a double reward for it?” He (صلّى الله عليه وآله وسلّم) replied, “Yes, no Muslims is afflicted by harm except that Allah removes his sins, just as the leaves fall off a tree.” [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (Engl. 7/373/no.550) and Muslim (Eng. trans. 4/1364/no.6235)]
