How Can The Ummah be United Once Again? by Shaykh Bin Baaz

September 26, 2010

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad, and his family and Companions. My recommendations on this subject is that importance should be given to calling all nations to Tawhid (belief in the Oneness of Allah/ monotheism), sincerity to Allah, adherence to His Shari‘ah (Islamic law), and avoidance of what opposes it. This is what will unite the Ummah on Al-Haqq (the Truth) and remove disputes and fanaticism in relation to the Madh-habs. The aim is to invite all Muslims to follow uprightly the Din (Religion) of Allah, uphold His Shari‘ah, and co-operate in piety and righteousness.

If this is achieved, the diverse groups and words will be united into one body, one edifice and one force against their enemies. However, if everyone fanatically follows their Madhab, shaykh, or opinions that conflict with what the Salaf (righteous predecessors) established, this is what leads to dissension.

Therefore, it is obligatory upon the Muslim scholars, Du‘ah (callers to Islam), and rulers to stand shoulder-to-shoulder and call all people to Al-Haqq, and to adhere to and follow it. The aim for all Muslims should be to obey Allah and His Messenger, abide by the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace be upon him), and be on their guard against whatever contradicts them. This is the only way to unite the words and battalions of Muslims and grant them victory over their enemies. May Allah grant us success!

One of the teaching says Rasulullah has prayed to god with 3 prayers,Allah has granted 2 of the request except the last one and the prophet says his ummah will be divided into 73 groups in akhiruzzaman. Some people say if Allah did not granted one of our prophet prayer that was to make/protect his ummah unite,so why must we against Allah words? They also says this will affect our iman! Huallahualambisawab!

    • I think you have a misunderstanding of the the hadeeth. In our deen, it is commanded by Allah and the Messenger (صلّى الله عليه وآله وسلّم) not to split in to the groups and sects. There are directs commands to the Muslims from Allah and his Messenger (صلّى الله عليه وآله وسلّم). Allah said in the Quran:
وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا (‘‘And hold fast altogether to the rope of Allaah and do not become divided.’’ [Soorah Aali-’Imraan 3:103].
And Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وآله وسلّم) said:
“The Jews split up into seventy one sects, and the Christians split up into seventy two sects. And my Ummah shall split up into seventy three sects, all of them being in the Fire except one.” We said, ‘Which one is that, O Messenger of Allaah?’ He said, “The one that follows what I am upon and my Companions.” [Related by at-Tirmidhee (no. 2641), al-Haakim (1/129). It has witnesses, refer to Tuhfatul-Ahwadhee (7/398), Ibn Maajah (no. 3992) and Aboo Daawood (no. 4597).]

Splitting in to 73 sects is not a rahmah rather we have to stay away from dividing into different sects. May Allah guide us all, ameen. You can read more from the following link:

Actually I understand it as what you have quoted, but there are some people using this hadith and extract few verses of Qura’n just to make people who are’nt knowledgeable to accept what they did! They stick on their believe and group by using Ayah 3 Ali Imran:verses 118.They manipulate the meaning of words ‘min duunikum’ with their translation! I just want to confirm it with you for my satisfaction of the truth and not to confront with them! Just for the better akidah! Alhamdulillah hi a’lal an’am, you widen up my knowledge and i really understand it now! Thank you very much!
